Welcome! My name is Sara Bjorkman. If you’re reading this page you must be interested in learning more about horses. I can relate because I have always gravitated to them. Okay, some would say obsessed . . .but still. I was lucky enough to be raised in a family that loved and owned horses. Therefore, my childhood was spent on the back of a horse, exploring the countryside, building jump courses in the woods (don’t tell my dad) and brushing their coats until I was sure their hair would fall out if I didn’t stop.
Everyone thought I would outgrow my “fascination” with horses. I definitely proved them wrong when I decided to obtain and later graduate from Colorado State University, with a degree in Equine Science. While there I purchased my first off the track Thoroughbred, Rio, a beautiful bay with kind eyes and the biggest heart. Days were spent studying chemistry and anatomy, while evenings were spent perfecting collected serpentines and half halts. Junior year at college I tried out and was accepted into the Colorado State show jumping team—where I can proudly say I was the only rider not to fall off. I know that doesn’t sound like a big accomplishment, but trust me—it was.
Following graduation it was time for Rio to find a new home especially since he had a whole new skill set (trail horse, jumper and therapist). I was able to find him a wonderful career as a three day eventer—considered the most challenging of all horse events. I went on to spend a few years gaining some real world corporate experience. However, it didn’t take long for horses to find their way back up to the top of my priority list.
I’ve managed to purchase a few more ex-racehorses, re-train them, and find them wonderful new owners. Over my many years of working with horses; I’ve attended clinics with world renowned horsemen, taught hundreds of lessons to individuals of all ages, and devised a format so anyone can learn to ride in a safe, fun, and highly effective manner. At Echo Basin we work hard to ensure a positive and mutually rewarding horse experience. Whether riding the trails or learning to post to the trot in the arena—you will have an exceptionally enjoyable and memorable life experience.
“Riding is a partnership. The horse lends you his strength, speed and grace, which are greater than yours. For your part, you give him guidance, intelligence and understanding which are greater than his. Together you can achieve a richness that neither can alone.” -Lucy Rees
